Here’s a dope painting series by Cupcakes In The Lobby, who created a Bosh, Wade & James painting set that’s currently on display at Sole Fly. Click on photo to enlarge and seeing better details.
The paintings are right above the entrance over the front door and they are viewable from the street. And they are for sale. Check them out in person at Sole Fly in the South Miami and Dadeland North area.
Jonathan Corso, also known in graff scene as “Ynot”, was tragically killed a couple days ago at a Broward Club after celebrating his 21st birthday. I’m definitely not well-versed in the graff scene, but I have seen his pieces around the city over the past couple years. Above are a couple photos of his stuff via MiamiGraffiti. Rest in peace…
The Miami Project by photographer, Jared Ryder
I’ve been seeing pieces of this project every time that I would stop by Last Rights Clothing’s offices. I’ve seen that its been an ongoing effort. And since I got a chance to meet up with Jared Ryder up in New York a few weeks ago, I’ve been meaning to post this. The photos are incredible and kinda speak about the unwritten and undocumented elements of the “305″. From photos during the Martin Luther King parade, Santeria priests/shrines to alligators in the Everglades – its all there and I can’t wait to see the finished product. Here’s what Jared says of the project:
Preface: This is a ongoing project meant to explore the Miami on the other side of the bridge…the real Miami. The idea was to show the diverse cultures and religions that make up Miami. The project started in the Everglades with Seminole and Miccosukee indian tribes. These were the first real Miami natives. We also documented some of the airboat tour guides. The project went on to explore the cigar rollers in Little Havana and the young gang members in Little Haiti. There is also a group of portraits of local Jai Lai players and the men who still make the cestas and balls or pelotas by hand. Special thanks to Joseph Cinnante from Last Rights Clothing for producing these shoots. These images will all be part of a upcoming book, limited t-shirt series and Gallery show with Last Rights. - Jared Ryder

The concept for the show materialized after the two artists collaborated on an illuminated sound activated art piece, with ABSTRK laying the foundation through paint, and Patrick, implementing the lighting and technology. Both artists’ work can be seen in the upcoming season of the Oxygen Network’s reality television show, Bad Girls Club.
Initially inspired by illuminating apparel, DoTheLiteThing transitions into the art world with his premiere, offering a fresh urban perspective through a burgeoning medium. ABSTRK, exploring his “stylisms” and the characters he paints, transforms his graffiti influenced art to canvas while continuing to express his style through murals. Selected by Gibson to customize an electric guitar auctioned off at the Hard Rock Casino, ABSTRK’s work has also been seen at art shows such as Primary Flight during Art Basel and through a vast array of street level installations throughout Wynwood and the Design District.
Set to the musical stylings of Madame Turk, Visual Intercourse guarantees an electric show catering to audiences seeking a raw and colorful experience.

Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, “It’s basically the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed”

At one point I was posting the whole series of these postcards and posters I got at this event a while ago that featured this Typography style. I was going to post them all, but simply forgot. Well here’s the Kanye West one. I’ll post the Lil Wayne one a little later.
Local photographer Benjamin Rusnak‘s image of a Guatemalan girl earned him a top prize. Rusnak won the prestigious Gordon Parks award, as well as Photo of the Year, from Interaction, the nation’s largest coalition of U.S.-based government organizations devoted to the world’s poor. Here’s a description of the photo:
A young girl cries after another child stole a toy she found in the garbage dump outside Quezaltenango, Guatemala. Desperate people travel for hours on foot to scrounge through the garbage daily to find scrap metal or bottles they can sell to recyclers or garments and toys they can repair and sell in a market. Often they eat what the find in the trash, carrying it home to share with their hungry families. In the developing world this is an all too common way for the poor to survive. Food For The Poor is helping to get people out of the dump with a vocational training center, new homes and water projects.
Here’s this new window display that Shoe Gallery put up a couple weeks ago just before the Memorial Day Weekend festivities. Artists Chris Miró & Ariyo Banjo of Gorilla Tactiks (GTc).
Labeled as the “Big Ass Chains” display, the concept was obviously based off the iconic “rapper chains” but this time, going BIG…REAL BIG.
“If you are driving by these windows, the chains immediately grab you, causing you to come in the store.” says Shoe Gallery’s Danny. And being that it was Memorial Day Weekend when the display went up, it was the best time because a few of the rappers who’s chains are featured actually stopped by.
Each window has someone and something different, but the main window has the “Maybach Music” Rick Ross chain, and Flo Rida’s chain. The next set has T-Pain’s “Big Ass Chain”, which was the starting point for the entire concept. And then you have Trick Daddy’s T-double-D AK-47 Chain.

Shepard Fairey put out another print this week. This one is of Muhammad Ali, based off a photos shot by photographer Michael Tighe. It measures 18″ x 24″, and was limited to 450 prints – all of which have been sold out at $70 a piece. Look for more prints and upcoming releases over at the Obey shop by clicking here.
Photographer Seth Browarnik (pictured in the middle in the photo above) is like a local legend of sorts. He’s pretty much taken himself and his company to the top of Miami’s world of celebrity photography. If its an exclusive event with tons of celebrities, one of Red Eye’s photographers are definitely front and center capturing the night’s events frame by frame.
Seth just launched WorldRedEye.com, which seems like a blog slash portfolio slash testament to the work that Seth and the photographers under Red Eye are capable of. Along with the site, they have a stream of social-network support via their matching Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Look forward to a busy summer in Miami. And look for it to all be captured by Seth and the Red Eye crew.
With lots of love and appreciation from the South Florida art scene(s), Gen Art closes up shop after struggling a bit during the recent economic downturn. Its definitely understandable as its been extremely rough for a lot of businesses over the past few years. Above is their official letter of closing sent out to their members, and posted on their website.
