27 year old make-up artist Michelle Phan (and pictured in the above video trailer of her channel) has simply blown up with over 6 million Youtube subscribers that has allowed her to not only launch her own cosmetics line, but also land various endorsement deals with companies like L’Oreal and Lancôme.
Well, for her make-up tutorial videos (that are extremely well shot by the way), she’s occasionally used songs from artists that fall under the Ultra Records umbrella of artists. Ultra was made aware of her profiting and adding to her stardom with the use of the labels’ music and Ultra decided to file suit.
Part of the suit includes the immediate removal of any videos that currently feature the music, as well as for Michelle Phan to stop using the music on any videos going forward. But Ultra is also pushing to be awarded $150,000 for every single offending claim.
One random twist to the case was when Kaskade (a former Ultra artist) came in support of Michelle by telling her on Twitter: “You’re awesome. You’ve turned millions of ppl on to my music. Which, ironically, I cannot say for my label. [In] Summary: I’m not suing @Michelle4Phan + Ultra Records isn’t my lap dog. I can’t do much about the lawsuit except voice my support for her. I find that @Michelle4Phan has great taste in music *ahem*, and knows secrets on how to make my eyes really POP. What’s not to like?”
So let’s see where this goes because it can affect a lot of videos and “Youtube stars” on Youtube going forward.
