This past weekend we got the chance to experience the Miami Marine Stadium with Gloria Estefan and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Friends of Miami Marine Stadium and supporters of the stadium are in the process of raising funds to be able to restore the stadium and bring it back to life as it has been abandoned since the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
A press conference took place where we met the site curators, the original architect Hilario Candela who designed the stadium 50 years ago and Gloria Estefan herself who announced and pledged $500,000 towards the restoration of the stadium. Per an agreement with the City Of Miami, the Friends of Miami Marine Stadium have until January 2015 to raise the $30 Million needed to restore the stadium and they’re about 1/3 of the way there.
The events of the day also included the unveiling of nine artworks from various artists and street artists that included Atomik, Tatiana Suarez, Luis Berros, Doze Green, Elbow Toe, Evoca1, Ian Kuali’I, Joe Iurato, RISK, and Rone. The artist initiative was curated by stencil artist and muralist Logan Hicks. Prints of all of the artworks will be available for sale at www.arthistory2014.com. Proceeds from the sale of the prints will directly support the stadium’s restoration.of that either identified or committed.
Also as a special unexpected surprise, a group of breast cancer survivors known as Team SOS Miami, came by to show their support for saving the stadium and even got blessed with a photo opp by Gloria herself. We were there to capture every moment of it.
And below are about 20 photos from the action-packed day. And you can expect a nice video interview we did with Gloria to go up on the site by tomorrow.
