Afeni Shakur has been named as the keynote speaker at an upcoming retreat by the Trayvon Martin Foundation called the “Circle of Mothers Empowerment Retreat.” The retreat is brought forth with the purpose of gathering women who have had their children taken from them courtesy of gun violence. The weekend will serve as a time and place to relax, restore, transform and become empowered among other women in similar shoes.
“Sybrina Fulton has dedicated her life to transforming family tragedy into social change. Since the death of her 17 year old son, Trayvon Martin, during a violent confrontation in 2012, Fulton has become an inspiring spokesperson for parents and concerned citizens across the country. This event is an opportunity for mothers who have experienced a similar tragedy to be restored, empowered, and equipped to become transformation agents in their own communities.
Like myself, Afeni Shakur has had her loss played out in the public eye,” says the foundation’s founder and Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, of the late Tupac’s mom. ”We, partnered with Lisa Nichols, will be able to impart the tools and wisdom we’ve gathered to help everyone that attends.”
The foundation was formed shortly after the 17-year-old Florida teen was shot dead on February 26, 2012 by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman. Its mission is to spread awareness about the impact of gun violence on the victims’ families.
The Circle of Mothers Empowerment Retreat will take place May 16-18 in Weston, Florida at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa. Click here for more details.
