NOW SHOWING – HistoryMiami’s Some Like It Hot Exhibit Featuring Miami’s Street Art Scene

HistoryMiami has had this pretty great exhibit for the last few weeks showcasing the growing street art scene in Miami. They also have a panel discussion with one of the artists and organizers (Alexander Vahan of Cushy Gigs) on April 19th.

But Some Like It Hot, is the museum’s first exhibition created by trailblazing Wynwood artists, showcasing Miami’s popular street art movement

Some Like It Hot captures a moment when art in the streets has emerged as a contemporary phenomenon in Miami.

“We’re proud to be the first Miami museum to present the work of these incredible local artists and the street art movement, both pieces of South Florida’s history,” says Stuart Chase, Museum Director and Chief Operating Officer. “Aside from a few pieces sitting in private collections, art of this kind has been conspicuously absent from museums in Miami until now.”

Street art in Miami has exploded in popularity in recent years, with the Wynwood neighborhood becoming one of the area’s major attractions for both tourists and locals. Local artist Brandon Opalka, who curated the exhibition, says artists he recruited to participate are honored to have a museum legitimize their work.

“Some Like It Hot will absolutely change the way local artists, including street artists, feel about their craft,” says Opalka, who began his own career in the 1990s, painting murals near the railroad tracks in Wynwood. “Whereas street artists would previously represent their own ideas and personalities in their work, you can see in each new mural and tag that pops up how these artists are now about representing Miami.”

Some of the artists that contributed exclusive works for the exhibition include 2alas, Lo Castro, George Sanchez-Calderon and the MSG Crew.
