If you’ve ever been to Publix and had one of their delicious deli subs then you’ve been lucky to preview heaven. Its pretty much established fact among South Floridians that no one can beat the consistency of Publix and their subs. Well, yesterday via Publix’s social media outlets and on a press release to media, Publix revealed its plans to officially enter the sub business with independent stand alone shops to compete against big brand sub shops like Subway and Quizno’s. The first locations will be tested in Miami, Orlando and the greater Tampa area and they plan to keep the classics but have seasonal “fusion” type subs as well and monthly $5 deals like their Subway counterparts.
Being that Subway has more locations than any other fast food chain, the potential is there for Publix to take their trademark quality subs towards a national and global market. Publix CEO William E. Crenshaw revealed in the release that all remaining Quizno’s locations and leases in the state of Florida and Georgia were recently acquired by the Publix corporation and within a two-year period, those locations will be converted to the currently unnamed “Publix Subs” shop concept. He also mentioned that if you read up to this point then you probably also think that popular Los Angeles burger restaurant is still coming to Miami. And that means that you’ve been had and “Abril” (in spanish) fooled two years in a row by the same website. No plans were released in terms of dates and actual menu items or their format. So details are scarce, but you can expect the classics and a few new sandwich concepts to be explored that were announced as examples…
New “sample” items on the menu include (and vary by area and season):
- Turkey Cranberry Sub
- Classic Pastrami
- Honey Chicken With Chipotle Gouda Cheese
