Well, this is interesting. Coconut Grove is apparently feeling a little bit of a backlash from the rising “star power” of Wynwood and all other “new” Miami hot spots. So much so that the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District is officially changing the name of the city to “The Nearby Republic of Coconut Grove”, which as estated in 1873 apparently.
“The idea is to show the Grove is changing, that it has its own vibe,” said Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, who lives in the Center Grove.
The new name slash moniker is to drive a revitalized interest into Coconut Grove, which has lost a little bit of his appeal to nearby neighborhoods like Midtown Miami, South Beach and the Wynwood. And with the loss of the Miami Improv, things have been going downhill quick at the Grove.
But if you ask us – despite its rich history….that name change isn’t gonna work. Unless its part of a new overall marketing campaign, that new “moniker” is struggling. It sounds like you’re back in 1873 again. Bring some sexy back to the neighborhood, get some better attractions, a few new promising retailers (with better incentives for them) and that’d be a start. Otherwise, the rest of Miami still sounds (and looks) a little more exciting by comparison.
