Julian Consuegra has become one of the most profound tastemakers in the Miami scene, an influence that has carried over to most social media networks and even outside the city limits. His clothing brand, Stray Rats, earned significant placement on a Complex list this year that recognized the top online streetwear brands, with the platform going as far as to state, “it’s surprising that Miami-based Stray Rats hasn’t blown up yet.” Although it’s quite difficult to pinpoint exactly what it means to truly blow up, the success we have seen from Stray Rats since its launch in April of 2010 is enough for us to say that Julian is certainly on the right path. The locals in South Florida have been eating up the designs all year that Stray Rats has dished out, complemented by the continued support of MIA Skate Shop.
The brand hasn’t strayed too far from its appeal to a youthful, uncompromising aesthetic (which contains elements of hip-hop, hardcore punk, etc.), but this year gave rise to pieces like the SR Coach Jacket (Spring ‘13) that has aided in the elevation of Stray Rats to new heights. The highlight of 2013 for Stray Rats was actually revealed on Julian’s personal Instagram (@ironkoopz), which helped to supply us with early previews of the Fall/Winter collection. Categorized as the “PLAY TEE”, Stray Rats conjured up one of the most brilliant flips we have ever seen in street fashion. With the Playstation 4 already stirring up loads of nostalgia, the “PLAY TEE” (brought in the form of a long sleeve) was the icing on the cake, and it sealed the deal for us with this declaration of Stray Rats as local brand of the year.
