This is a photo purportedly taken on November 18, 1930 (the same year of its opening) of the State Theater in Miami, Florida. We have no exact location or area of where this building was originally located but its most likely on Flagler off of Miami avenue. And judging by the date of the photo, this was during the times of the Great Depression in the United States.
But despite the somberness of the depression, comedian Eddie Cantor was the main draw of the marquee with the musical Whoopee to brighten up the mood of the era. The main tune from the musical was the song “Makin’ Whoopee”, which was a hit for its comedic tone and for being a quirky euphemism for sex that may or may not have spawned the whole “its cheaper to keep her” concept regarding divorces.
