Everybody was talking about that Instagram video LeBron sent out showing that he was being escorted to the Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake concert by Miami-Dade Police going in the opposite way of traffic. When LeBron posted it, it was odd because driving on the opposite lanes is highly unusual. Well apparently, the specialized escort violated some department policies.
Jay-Z apparently wouldn’t start the show until LeBron was in the building, so that’s why police got involved to give LeBron a little roadside assistance. So near the entrance to Sun Life Stadium they bypassed traffic via the opposite lanes from one traffic intersection to another (less than a mile apparently). But the police escort wasn’t scheduled AND driving on the opposite side of the street violates department policies – even if safety precautions were taken.
The exact department was impossible to make out in the original video posted on Instagram, but on Monday the Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed that an off-duty officer working for Sun Life Stadium that night provided an escort for James.
“He received a call that LeBron James was stuck in traffic and to facilitate him to get him to the next intersection, which he did,” said Miami-Dade Police Maj. Nancy Perez. “He drove in the opposite lane, which is against policy, so that’s where the problem comes in.”
Perez said the escort wasn’t scheduled.
“He just took him (James) from one intersection to the next intersection, which is really less than even a mile,” she added.
The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating.
“We’re looking into the fact of who notified this officer and who told him to take LeBron James to the next intersection,” said Perez.
I don’t think there’s much of a need to blame LeBron for this one, but more so the officer(s) that green lit the move. I mean if you get offered a police escort, you’re going to trust the police know exactly what they’re doing for you. Let’s see who gets reprimanded for dropping the ball.
