Not a late April Fools joke, in fact, its something of a positive cause apparently. Women are often thrown the phrase “if you dress like a slut, you’re gonna get treated like one” and are often told that the way they dress provoke certain actions from men; rape being on the extreme end of that. In an effort to offset those beliefs and that way of thinking, the national SLUTWALK movement was born.

The FIU chapter of the National Organization for Women is organizing the first Slut Walk to Miami, on Wednesday April 3rd at 4:30 pm on the FIU Modesto Modique Campus at the GC Fountain.  For more details on this event, please visit this website www.facebook.com/MiamiSlutWalk and RSVP to take part in the event!

While the term “Slut” can be offensive, we urge our community to look past this traditional derogatory definition to further understand the same illicit and suggestive stereotypes that we are combating. The Slut Walk is a part of an international movement aimed to battle against rape culture and promotes sexual empowerment. In 2011, a Toronto Police officer stated, “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to get victimized”. This statement stimulated an uproar in the international community. Sexism, stereotypes, poor education, language, pop culture, and the media perpetuate this idea that “sluts ask for it”.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) of FIU concerns itself as an entity for the prevention of violence against women and we strive to campaign for equitable racial and gender rights. The Slut Walk is a call-to-action and global initiative to fight against slut blaming and justification for sexual violence.
