While we usually have giving this recognition to “Music Video Directors”, but we thought we’d keep the category a little more general this year.
Billy Corben of Rakontur has been a long time contributor to the visuals that have come out of Miami. Starting with the Cocaine Cowboys franchise and The U documentary, Billy has brought on tons of success to himself and his company.
Well, in 2012, Billy and co brought us Broke, the season opener for ESPN’s 30 For 30 documentary series. The doc exposed the realities of what it is to be in the financial shoes of professional atheletes. A grim picture of a person in career that makes the bulk of their money within their 20’s and once they reach their peak, that money stream can fall quite drastically, if not be completely extinct. Throw in friends and family with their hands out and the endless choices of vices – and that’s how you become broke.
It was a great film that sparked discussion, but most importantly awareness. So kudos to Billy Corben for a helluva year.
