REMINDER: Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock at The Fillmore – 9/27/12

Kendrick Lamar-BET Music-Matters Tour

In case you’ve been living in a cave for the past two months, here is a reminder that Kendrick Lamar will be performing tomorrow (September 27th) at The Fillmore in Miami Beach, FL for the BET Music Matters Tour. The whole Black Hippie group will be in attendance, minus SchoolBoy Q, who is currently on tour with A$AP Rocky. Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock are all artists from the same Top Dawg Entertainment movement and the three are rightfully placing their mark amongst contemporary artists in the Hip-Hop genre.

Under the mentorship of Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar gained notoriety for a selection of independent projects he released throughout the years and immediately received critical acclaim for his efforts on his independent album Section .80. With similar success, Ab-Soul has gained notoriety and respect for his Long Term Mentality series, and most recently his independent album Control System.

Kendrick Lamar is headlining the tour and this time around Kendrick is giving fans an experience they won’t forget. On the third stop of the tour, Kendrick Lamar brought out J. Cole during his set in North Carolina. The gift was an unexpected one for fans who were expecting Ab Soul and Jay Rock to be the only other emcees on the ticket.

A week later, during Kendrick Lamar’s set in Toronto, Kendrick was greeted with a warm welcome by fans. Kendrick Lamar spoke to fans about his experience in Toronto last year during his birthday and how the city created a special place in his heart. During the second half of Kendrick Lamar’s set, he felt it was time to spice things up and he brought out Drake who performed “HYFR.” After Drake’s short set, he reminded his city to be on the look out for Kendrick Lamar’s album releasing on October 22nd. The Toronto native also spoke about his excitement for the feature that he would be apart of on Kendrick Lamar’s debut album Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City.

Tomorrow, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock will bring the city to life, and who knows we may get the same special treatment that North Carolina and Toronto received. Who will be representing our city as a special guests? MMG? Will Miami residents such as Lil’ Wayne pay a visit? Or will Kendrick take it old school and reach out to some of our pioneers? This is all just speculation, but regardless the outcome of tomorrow’s event will be a special moment for the city and the Hip-Hop community who have followed the TDE movement through their inception as independent artists.

Recently this year, Kendrick Lamar signed a deal to Doctor Dre’s Aftermath Records. However, Kendrick Lamar is able to stay under the TDE umbrella as a joint partnership.
