Rest in peace to Miami’s 93 ROCK radio station (93.1 FM) which switched formats and fired Bubba The Love Sponge

Cox Media owns a couple stations down here in the South Florida market including 99 Jamz, Hot 105 and the 93.1 FM frequency: 93 Rock. Well, this morning 93 Rock was unfortunately taken off the air earlier today on November 20, 2010 and was replaced with an all Christmas music format. The station’s new tag line is currently a self imposed “South Florida’s Official Holiday Music Station”.

It doesn’t stop there. Popular radio host Bubba The Love Sponge and his syndicated program was also given the axe earlier this morning as well without warning or notification. This kind of thing is common in the radio industry and format switches are brutal and often sudden to the staff at the specific stations. But Miami was one of Bubba’s biggest AND most important markets.

While the station has always had mixed reviews and mixed fan fare, it does mark the end of an era of something that was and is still needed for the fans of the Rock side of things. Its being said that the station will keep playing Holiday music for the season and will most likely announce a new format when the new year arrives. Listeners (and Bubba himself) took to Twitter to announce some of their frustration.
