(MTV NEWS) – With two singles already burning up the airwaves (“Whatcha Say” and “In My Head”), a debut album in the works and a starring role in the upcoming MTV movie “Turn the Beat Around,” Jason Derülo is set to make an impact this year. But first, he would like to introduce himself.
“I feel like the first part of last year was spent on trying to get known — get my name out there kind of — and now that that’s done we can actually start the fun,” Derülo said. “You can’t really get to know somebody off of one song.”
Although his first album won’t drop until February, Derülo isn’t new to the music scene. At only 20 years, old Derülo is already an established songwriter. After getting his first break at 16, the singer has since written for major acts like Lil Wayne, Danity Kane, Sean Kingston and Iyaz (he co-wrote the massive single “Replay”). Now Derülo wants to establish himself as his own artist.
“2010 is definitely the year for me to make my mark and let people know I’m here to stay,” Derülo proclaimed. “Take over a bit.”
Citing Usher and Madonna has major influences on his music, Derülo debuted with “Whatcha Say,” an electronic R&B plea to a girl that samples indie darling Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek.” He has followed that up with his new sample-free single “In My Head.”
“I’m basically the person who will try and reinvent himself on each song. I want every song to be completely different,” Derülo explained. “I mean, you can tell the difference between ‘Whatcha Say’ and ‘In My Head’ already. I’m excited for the world to get to know me musically.”
