“I’m Sure” 2008 – Acrylic On Canvas
KAWS and the unveiling of the “Saturated” exhibit. The long awaited night came last Saturday September 20th at the Galerie Emmanuel Perotin in the heart of Wynwood. KAWS came to the 305 and blessed the Magic City with his first show in years and was also supported with exhibits by two other artists, Daniel Arsham and Conrad Shawcross, both who are a bit abstract for my taste, but you can be the judge with some of their samples below.
The location for the showing was definitely dope. I had never been to Galerie Perotin before that evening, but its a great venue with and endless possibility to mix sophistication with a little bit of edge. As was proven.
KAWS was definitely the steal of the evening as all the photographers and attendees seemed to gravitate towards him throughout the entire evening. Although I tend to see his work as a parody of someone else’s creation, I couldn’t help but get in awe when I saw these Spongebob pieces up close. The detail in the brush strokes and lines are so incredibly clean that the paintings look like prints off a graphic done on Adobe Illustrator. There were a total of 8 Spongebob pieces and 3 Smurf pieces. They were said to be from Pharrell’s personal collection. Even though KAWS straight rejected my request for an interview, I still respect his hustle and definitely wish him much continued success.
I want to thank Kristia at Galerie Perotin for allowing us to cover the event. And a big shout out to all the faces that I ran into: Culture KIngs boys, Like Mike, DMG, Drop, Abstrack, Bird Club Clothing fam, Sonia, and Keen One. Pictures below…
