From Dream Team to Redeem Team

In 1992 the United States Men’s Olympic Basketball team was what is considered one of the greatest teams in history. The “Dream Team” included the greats of the time: Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Christian Laettner, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, John Stockton with coach Chuck Daly at the helm. This team was not to be taken likely or undermined by anyone. They breezed through the competition and brought home the gold.

Of course every team after the 1992 Dream Team had to face the challenge of living up to the “Dream Team” standard, go undefeated and bring home the gold. In comes 1996 and the Olympics was ready for the US to put together “Dream Team II” which wasn’t as dominating but brought home the gold. The squad consisted of Charles Barkley, Anfernee Hardaway, Grant Hill, Karl Malone, Reggie Miller, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Gary Payton, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, John Stockton with Lenny Wilkins as the coach. The world was a different place Michael Jordan retired and went to play Baseball with the White Sox and left that to unretire play in the Olympics and retire for good. ANYWAYS! Fast forward to 2000 “Dream Team III” came together with a line up of Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Ray Allen, Vin Baker, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Tim Hardaway, Allan Houston, Jason Kidd, Antonio McDyess, Alonzo Mourning, Gary Payton, Steve Smith and Rudy Tomjanovich coaching the third generation of the “Dream Team” dynasty.

Now 2004 rolls in and assembling the “Dream Team” seemed like an easy enough task. They selected: Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Richard Jefferson,  Stephon Marbury, Shawn Marion, Lamar Odom, Emeka Okafor, Amare Stoudemire, Dwyane Wade and Larry Brown was the coach. This incarnation of the US team was not the dream we expected but a boarder line nightmare. The team was lacking in a few places with a few errors. Unfortunately they lost 2 games and brought home the Bronze.

Now this year 2008 the “Dream Team” was assembled and is tore through each opponent with only one thing in mind, gold. They have been dubbed the “Redeem Team” and rightfully so. They have one thing in mind was bringing that gold medal back for the US. If you haven’t kept up with the team here’s the roster: Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Tayshaun Prince, Michael Redd, Dwyane Wade, Deron Williams, and Mike Krzyzewski as coach. The team came home with a gold medal. The chemistry was definitely there from the begining and the gold medal is theirs. Not to be placed above the 1992 Dream Team but they’ll be placed right next to them.
