Starbucks will close five South Florida locations in its purge of roughly 600 stores with weak sales, as it tries to balance demand for its pricey coffee amid economic turmoil.
The retrenchment was announced earlier this month but Starbucks released a complete list of doomed locations Thursday night. The Seattle company said the store closures will start this month and end in early 2009.
The local locations are:
• 9439 W. Atlantic Blvd., Coral Springs
• 1100 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale
• 3399 N. State Road 7, Lauderdale Lakes
• 9600 SW 160th St., Miami
• 750 NE 125th St., North Miami
The move to close the stores is a turnabout from Starbucks’ aggressive expansion plans. But the company curtailed those plans as it saw traffic and its profits decline recently as the faltering economy has led some consumers to question their spending on expensive coffee.
California took the biggest hit in the Starbucks retreat, with 88 locations set for closure. Florida will lose 59.
